Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program   opportunity expires on 12/12/2008
The CDE, through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), will grant funds to school sites to provide students with a variety of free fresh fruit and vegetable snacks throughout the school day as a supplement to (and not part of) the school breakfast and school lunch programs, and to teach students about good nutrition. Public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools are eligible to apply on behalf of elementary school sites that participate in the National School Lunch Program. An eligible school site MUST be an elementary school and have 50 percent or more of its students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

Video Contest: How does the garden help you grow?   opportunity expires on 05/05/2009

To help celebrate Life Lab Science Program's 30th Birthday Life Lab is hosting a video contest for those working with school gardens. Produce a 30 second to 2 minute video that answers the following question:
"How does the garden help you grow"?

With the power of photos, video clips, words and/or song show the world what your school garden program means to you and your school.
The Prizes
- One winner will receive $400 ($300 in garden supplies for your school garden and $100 cash)
- One runner up will receive $150 ($100 in school gardening supplies and $50 cash)
Timeline
- SUBMISSION DEADLINE - May 5th, 2009. Entries will start being accepted on March 15, 2009.
- The winning videos and video creators will be announced at Life Lab's 30th Birthday Party at the Life Lab Garden Classroom in Santa Cruz, CA on May 30th, 2009.

2009 Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Spotlight Awards   opportunity expires on 06/30/2009
The 2009 Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Spotlight Awards presented by the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation will shine a light on teachers, principals, organizations and events that positively impact the physical activity, fitness levels and well-being of California's children and youth. The Awards are as follows: Gold Medalist - $10,000, Silver Medalist - $2,500, Bronze Medalist - $1,000. Teachers, Principals, Parent Associations (like PTAs), and Non-Profit Organizations that have stepped forward, and to make a significant contribution to supporting physical activity and fitness for children. You may also submit nominations in these other categories: Park and Recreation Program of the Year, Event of the Year, School District of the Year (in this category we will make 11 awards of commemorative flags).

School Garden Grants   opportunity expires on 12/31/2010
Western Growers Foundation funds school fruit and vegetable gardens in California. Schools receive up to $1500, an irrigation kit provided by T-Systems, and a box of teacher resources. Deadlines for postmarked application are June 1 and November 15 of each year.

Real Food Fellowship   opportunity expires on 05/06/2011
The Real Food Fellowship is a nine-month program beginning June 2011 that supports 8-10 emerging leaders (ages 18-29) around the county to become powerful voices for food justice in their communities and on the national scene.  We welcome organizers, artists, and generally awesome people who are newer to the food movement as well as food justice advocates looking to deepen their work.

Garden Enhanced Nutrition Education for Preschoolers   opportunity expires on 06/30/2011
Funds will be awarded through a competitive grant process to 100 child care centers and preschools in California who participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program.  Each awardee will receive $1,000 for the development of their garden enhanced nutrition education program.  The awarded funds may be spent on garden equipment, garden and educational supplies, and professional development.
