Healdsburg Unified School District

A new school food service supervisor, Nancy May, transformed the Healdsburg schools’ food programs by shifting the focus away from a la carte menu items and back to healthy meal options offered in a cafeteria line. The kitchens in three old schools were renovated to facilitate freshly cooked meals. Salad bars at two schools operate twice a week offering farm fresh, often organic, produce whenever possible. The produce is bought from local farmers who were identified by Nancy May at the farmers’ market and through word of mouth. The farms deliver the produce directly to the district every Monday for the twice-weekly salad bars.
In addition to the changes in the food service operations, each of the 6 schools in the district now has a school garden. These programs were made possible through the donations and work of volunteers, and a $30,000 grant from Shaping Health as Partners in Education (SHAPE) program.
