After School Produce Stand

This program consisted of a weekly after-school produce stand that ran for three consecutive weeks during November and December at Pacific Elementary School. The program initially started at Nicholas Elementary School as well, but due to logistical problems was not able to continue at that school as planned. Instead, select items were served to students in the cafeteria during lunch. Surveys and evaluations, therefore, were conducted only at Pacific Elementary School. The produce stand was set up right outside of the school and as the students lined up to leave school for the day, they passed the produce stand and received a bag containing two types of produce and an educational handout about the produce to take home to their parents. The produce served varied each week. By the end of the three weeks, the produce featured included: Fuji apples, mandarin oranges, Asian pears, Fuyu persimmons, carrots, and Napa cabbages. The produce was all purchased from growers at the local farmers market. Out of the produce that was seasonally available, we tried to select items that catered to the desires and demographics of the student population. The program was evaluated with post-event surveys given to a select number of students and parents at Pacific Elementary School.
