Berkeley Unified School District

Berkeley has two very exciting Farm to School related programs going on.

The Edible Schoolyard The Center for Ecoliteracy, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School have developed the Edible Garden, an organic garden that is integrated into both the school curriculum and the school lunch program. This innovative program, organized by chef and community member, Alice Waters, is an integral part of the students’ education. All students work in the garden, prepare meals in the kitchen, learn in the kitchen classroom, and practice composting. Unlike other Farm to School Programs, this school is the farm. For more about this project read the Evaluation Study done by the Center for Ecoliteracy.

Berkeley Unified School District Berkeley has made a district-wide commitment to integrating healthy foods into their school lunches, and teaching students the value of healthy eating. Nearly all of Berkeley’s schools have school gardens, of third of these schools produce vegetables for school consumption. The District has also passed a progressive Food Policy recognizes the connections between healthy eating and effective learning and strives to bring only high-quality foods into their schools and encourage responsible consumption through health, recycling, composting, and gardening.
